Driver 1 - Equitable Academic & Social Supports

Resources in this Change Idea

Evidence Base

Research shows that when students understand that academic setbacks are a common part of the learning process, and not an indicator that they do not belong or do not have what it takes to succeed, they are more likely to persist through challenges and take advantage of resources that can support their success (e.g., Hurtado & Carter, 1997; Murdock-Perriera et al., 2019; Murphy et al., 2020; Walton & Brady, 2020). When students are placed on academic probation or are suspended from the university, they often report feeling ashamed and stigmatized when receiving the letter, leading them to disengage from the school environment. Brady, Kroeper, Henderson, Ozier, et al (In Progress). Institutions can increase the likelihood that students will successfully continue to complete their degrees by destigmatizing the academic probation and suspension process and providing support for students to return to good academic standing
